They don't 'need' to be anything. Have a look at some others on the forum, right click them and click 'View image info' to get the size of it. Our signatures are slightly too big for this forum (have to scroll slightly), but there are some great examples elsewhere!

General rule of thumb (just shooting from the hip here): 400x50, 450x75, 500x100, 600x125... Somthing that won't require you to scroll to see it and small enough to "blend in" and not take up more space than the message body.
